March 1, 2015
In this Lenten season we all look forward to the coming of Easter and the resurrection of our Lord on the third day. We prepare ourselves by fasting and giving alms and take on a slightly different prospective during this season; being more aware of what it is to be a Catholic and for us as Catholic gentlemen, Knights of Columbus.
This year Easter comes early, March 27th and I am sure that we will be called on to perform honor guard and other various duties at parishes. That may be all well and good, but it is how we feel in preforming our duties as knights, more importantly how we stand up to the challenges that confront us, both as Catholics as well as Knights of Columbus. Personal sacrifice is one of the key elements that outline character; giving of one’s self demonstrates one’s personal attributes. Helping others by sharing one’s time and energy for the greater good of all makes us all better human beings. The Lenten season is such a time.
Over the past several years during the month of March, Tonti Council has participated in a fund raising for Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, originally call “Shamrocks for Kids”, its new name is “March for Kids”. Each year we have expanded our fund raising circle to include additional parishes and other councils and this year we are continuing that expansion. This effort costs the council no monetary funds, only the participation of its members, sharing of their time and effort to help others, and their personal commitment to “Making a Difference”. If everyone follows this philosophy what a better place this world would be. Are you willing to shake the can for the boys and girls at Mercy Home?
March this year has other than a normal schedule. Normally the Feast of the Annunciation is held on March 25th and it is also Good Friday, Easter is on Sunday March 27. The church calendar this year will celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation on April 4th, 2016. Tonti council will celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation with a special mass at St. Robert Bellarmine parish at 7:00 PM. All knights are encouraged to attend and 4th degree Knights are asked to participate in an honor guard.
Our social meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month. Given that this March’s social meeting falls on Saint Patrick’s Day we are combining both our Valentine social normally held in February with that of a special Saint Patrick’s Day celebration; “Knight at the Races”, dessert contest and more. Hope everyone can be there.
Upcoming events include the Columbian Boosters dinner on March 31st at the White Eagle and the State Convention on April 29th thru May 1st in Springfield.
